This year the Grande Prairie Storm hockey team is celebrating its 18th anniversary as part of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).  With over 40 years of junior hockey history in the Grande Prairie region, the Storm have a wonderful tradition of hockey to uphold.  Now that the season is underway, there’s a whole lot of hockey excitement headed to Grande Prairie!

Be sure to check out the Grande Prairie Storm’s schedule to see when they’re playing a home game here in Grande Prairie.  It’s a great way to catch some very exciting hockey at a fraction of the cost of an NHL game.  With all home games taking place at the Canada Games Arena (also known as Crystal Centre) you get to share the excitement with over 3,000 fans!  Crystal Centre has also played host to a number of other great events, including performances by Rhianna, Sir Elton John, Backstreet Boys, and more.  Can’t make it to a game while in town?  You can always stream AJHL games online using our hotel’s complimentary high speed internet access.

Formed in 1995, the Grande Prairie Storm were originally part of the Swan City Hockey Association and later joined the AJHL in 1996.  Since joining the AJHL they have made it to playoffs every single year – including placing within the final four six times!  The GP Storm have also earned the distinction of having the 2nd most wins of any AJHL team, and won the championship twice (2004 and 2009).  When Grande Prairie hosted the 2004 Royal Bank Cup Junior 'A' Championship, the previous attendance record for the nationwide event was bested by over 9,000 people!  It’s safe to say that Grande Prairie, AB loves their hockey!  To add to their list of accolades, they have also earned titles such as Rookie of the Year (1998), MVP (2002, 2007, 2011), Best Goaltender (2004), and many more.

The AJHL plays a major role in helping young players progress through the sport.  This includes scholarships for post-secondary schools with strong hockey programs (home and abroad).  Players are given access to on and off ice training with high quality coaching, great facilities, a physiotherapy program, and the chance to play against some of the best talent in the province.
