Outdoor activities might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of winter in Alberta. However, Grande Prairie offers a lot of great reasons to get outside for some fresh air and exercise during this particularly chilly time of year. Once you get dressed in your warmest winter clothes and head outside, you’ll discover that there’s nothing quite as invigorating as a day spent playing in the snow!

Winter Family Frostival

The annual Winter Family Frostival provides a great reason to get outside and enjoy the season with your family. Hosted by the County of Grande Prairie, this event will encourage you to abandon your phone and computer for a while and to get active. Take the young ones on an exhilarating toboggan ride, go for an invigorating skate around the ice rink or check out an incredible ice sculpture. In addition, there are sleigh rides, snow painting, showshoeing, an ice carving demo,  bonfires and refreshments. This event will take place on February 17th in honour of Family Day.

Ice Rinks and Arenas

Grande Prairie has many indoor and outdoor rinks where you can lace up your skates and hit the ice! Small bodies of water freeze over in the wintertime, and parks and recreation areas will be open to the public once ponds have sufficiently frozen over to safely skate on. Gather your friends and family for a game of hockey or simply enjoy the wintry scenes of nature from the sidelines. Currently, open outdoor rinks are listed on the City of Grande Prairie's website. You can also perfect your skating skills at one of Grande Prairie’s many indoor rinks at the Coca-Cola Centre, Revolution Place and the David Barr Arena.

Winter Walking Trails

Grande Prairie is home to many beautifully maintained city parks. During the winter months, these parks are covered with fresh blankets of snow, creating some truly picturesque and scenic views. Take a brisk and refreshing walk around the trails at Crystal Lake, which loops around the park’s outdoor skate rink, or Muskoseepi Park, which features some great tobogganing hills. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, the Muskoseepi Pavilion rents out snowshoe equipment for you to take around the park.

After a day spent immersed in winter activities, you’ll be looking for a warm and comfortable homebase where you can curl up with a cup of hot cocoa.
